AFL-CIO is providing help to people who have been affected by the devastating
storms that hit the Albany area. We are working with some area churches, State
Representative Winfred Dukes and the United Way of Southwest Georgia. We are
asking for your assistance so that we can provide as much as we can to as many
as we can. Your donations can be dropped off on the first floor of the IBEW Local
613 Building (501 Pulliam Street SW, Atlanta, GA 30312) by 5:00 PM on 2/2/17.

On
the whole, Judge Gorsuch’s written opinions on labor and employment issues do
not appear to contain any unpleasant surprises for employers. His
opinions—which, by and large, are clear and easy to read—have not expressed any
new interpretations of existing law that would disadvantage employers.

Following
a call for ethics reform, Abbott urged lawmakers to end the practice of
automatic deduction of union dues from the paychecks of government workers,
saying “taxpayer money shouldn’t be used to support the collection of union
dues.”
Rick
Levy, secretary-treasurer of the Texas AFL-CIO, said he’d rather
have heard Abbott talking about issues that families discuss around the dinner
table.
“He
seemed to throw a bone to those who are on an ideological crusade,” Levy said.
“It was misguided.”
